Mardi Gras is upon us here in New Orleans. Beads, floats, brass bands, and... geeks! Yes, geeks. Our next parade, which rolls this Saturday, February 22, is the Intergalactic Krewe Of Chewbacchus, a strange krewe of science fiction, fantasy and cosplay fans (or BacchanAlians).<br /><br />I caught up with Midori Tajiri-Byrd, artist, costumer, milliner, baker, make-up artist, writer, musician, parade captain, and weirdo. Midori is essentially a force of nature. She creates amazing costumes, has modeled for me, has done make-up for my photography sessions, and marches in several parades. In amongst all of those things, Midori is captain of the Mystic Krewe Of P. U. E. W. C.</div>
<a name='more'></a> (People for the Inclusion of Unicorns, Elves, and Winebots in Chewbacchus), a sub-krewe of the Chewbacchus parade made up of, you guessed it, unicorns, elves and winebots. Here are some things Midori and I discussed.<br /><br />

Iron Man 3 Mark 42 Muscle Light Up Child Costume<br />ou are involved with several Mardi Gras parades, including Joan of Arc, and Chewbacchus. How did you first get involved with doing parades? What attracted you to this type of event?<br /><br />What attracts me to parade culture in general is the ability to spread joy so quickly. For people who come to see a parade, whether it is a big float production, an artists walking parade or a neighborhood second line, it brings instant joy to the audience and, as a participatory event, they can often join in a second line, dress in their own costumes or try to catch special throws. For the performers in parades, it takes a certain kind of personality that not only wants to perform and dress up in costume, but wants to bring that kind of joy to people. And when you dance and march in these parades, throughout the weather, and the distance and the obstacles and still find a way to rally and bring excitement to the crowds, its the greatest feeling to share.<br /><br />My mother is a very creative and resourceful woman and growing up she always made our costumes by hand. Being a performer by nature I never missed an opportunity to wear a costume, get on stage, decorate my bike or walk in a parade, but in most cities these opportunities are seasonal and not year round.<br /><br />When my band played in Chicago I was on stage every weekend and often created theme nights as an opportunity to create new costumes. I began modeling for photographer Susan Anderson for a year-long series in Chicago Magazine that included a calendar girl theme of monthly pin-up girl costumes. While doing that series my interest in costuming and makeup artistry grew and I began working on my own projects.<br /><br />While living in Chicago I walked in the Halloween costume parade in Boystown for a few years and began learning about how to translate a costume for the parade route, vs on-stage or on-camera. But it wasn't until I moved to New Orleans that I really began to step-up my involvement and love of parade culture and costuming. There are so many talented people here and so many venues to show your work and participate, it creates an environment where this kind of craft can grow like no where else in the world.<br /><br />I initially joined [the dance krewe] The Organ Grinders and learned about how performance translates to the parade route. You need a lot of stamina to dance (not walk) in costume for hours on cobblestone streets in inclement weather and still keep up the high spirits that the crowds come to see! I have become more involved with additional parade Krewes in the past few years including the International Krewe of Chewbacchus (captain of the sub-Krewe of P.U.E.W.C.), I was Grand Marshall of the St. Catherine's Day hat parade in 2011, and am now a board member, I walk in the Barkus parade as a volunteer for Save-An-Angel, I have done volunteer work for I Heart Louisiana and their Greening of Mardi Gras efforts including the "Throw Me Something Local" campaign, and have joined Katrina Brees' groups in performances for America's Got Talent and this year will be riding an art bike in the Muses parade and Tuck's parade. I am also currently a member of the Chorus Girl Project, a New Orleans dance performance group. I also plan on participating more in the Nola Social Ride "Happy Thursday" costumed theme bike rides.<br /></div>

<br /><br />Chewbacchus is a 4-year-old parade. How do you feel Chewbacchus has<br />grown in four years, and where would you like to see it in another four years?<br /><br />This is my second year marching with Chewbacchus and my first year as<br />a Krewe Captain. As a parade Krewe, Chewbacchus is probably unlike most other krewes in that it is made up of specifically sci-fi and fantasy fans. Beyond that, the costumes, contraptions and throws are all DIY and handmade. We are the world's only sci-fi parade krewe and the only one in New Orleans with these types of specialized "contraptions" (the customized vehicles that are driven, rolled, pushed or pulled through the parade instead of floats).<br /></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />n the few years of its existence the International Krewe of Chewbacchus has grown exponentially and while it is still a walking parade, the explosion of numerous sub-krewes and more fantastic contraptions have resulted in a truly unique parade experience. As a krewe it has some basic management at its core, but the sub-krewes are run as small satellites and have freedom to create their own themes, ideas and events. As a krewe built around fandom it has become a home for all genres of interest. As the sub-krewes grow I would love to see them keep the same welcoming nature towards the variety of members we include.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />You are leading the sub-krewe Krewe of P. U. E. W. C. this year. How did that sub-krewe get started? I assume it was your love of unicorns that got you interested?<br /><br />The Krewe of P.U.E.W.C. was initially created to bring the fantasy-based fans into Chewbacchus, which, initially, was only Sci-Fi based. The founders staged a mock protest ( a faux-test) of Unicorns lobbying to be included in Chewbacchus. As a result the People for the inclusion of Unicorns, Elves and Whine-bots in Chewbacchus was born. This year, when I took the role of captain, I wanted to adjust the name of the sub-krewe to indicate that we are inclusive of all fantasy-based fandom and cosplay genres, and so the name extention of P.U.E.W.C. - F.A.R.M. was debuted. It is now the People for the Inclusion of Unicorns, Elves and Whinebots in Chewbacchus... and fantasy, anime, (Lord of the) Rings and magic! And yes, the name is intentionally clunky and convoluted ;)<br /><br />As a kid I was not especially girly at all, I wanted to be more of a tomboy, but was bad at sports. I did love performance though, but they didn't have all the glitter and sparkles they have these days. I was raised on The Muppet Show and Bugsy Malone, so while unicorns weren't exactly a part of my world, fantastical creatures and vintage show-girls were. I'm not so much a Sci-Fi fan, but I love cosplay, costuming, creating fantastical creatures and weird art, and building a world were people who love these things feel welcome to participate.<br /><br />The most important part of participating in the parade culture and specifically in Chewbacchus and the Mystic Krewe of P.U.E.W.C. is to have a sense of humor and to not take yourself or anything too seriously. We work hard to create our costumes and contraptions, but beyond that the goal is to have fun, spread fun, rinse and repeat.<br /><br />New Orleans is a city where fantasy and reality seem to blend into one another with some regularity. People walk down the streets every day in outfits that might be considered costumes in other places, and of course, we have several weeks a year when people costume and play out roles. Do you feel that there's a connection between the New Orleans lifestyle and fandom? Do you feel like New Orleans encourages or discourages fandom?<br /><br />In terms of fandom as it relates to geek culture and sci-fi, no, I don't think New Orleans is discouraging in any way. There are plenty of sci-fi and fantasy fans here, as well as a healthy contingent of cosplayers and Lolita girls. In general, when out of costume, most fandom culture tends to be less outgoing, so in relation to the average New Orleans crowd that may wear a weekday tutu or a wig because its Wednesday (myself included), you may not see them as much when its not a specific event. But the fact that New Orleans is such a welcoming culture in terms of the eccentricity of its residents means that, even when they don't understand it, they accept whatever you feel like wearing that day. In that regard it may sometimes look like a lazier, more humid Seattle. But its the attitude here that sets us apart. Because of our parade culture, which is year-round and includes spontaneous second-lines that march through streets at the slightest provocation, its a much happier, more jovial environment when it comes to alternative ways you adorn yourself, fandom or otherwise.<br /><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6Q-twDwd_B0/Uwbqbrn3r4I/AAAAAAAAAhU/sF2aN_4s-KU/s1600/The-Chewbacchus-Parade-Mardi-Gras-Costumes+%287%29.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6Q-twDwd_B0/Uwbqbrn3r4I/AAAAAAAAAhU/sF2aN_4s-KU/s1600/The-Chewbacchus-Parade-Mardi-Gras-Costumes+(7).jpg" height="320" width="211" /></a><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-04aRDiDjNHw/UwbqbUU6CjI/AAAAAAAAAhE/Y_U543xScfI/s1600/The-Chewbacchus-Parade-Mardi-Gras-Costumes+%286%29.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-04aRDiDjNHw/UwbqbUU6CjI/AAAAAAAAAhE/Y_U543xScfI/s1600/The-Chewbacchus-Parade-Mardi-Gras-Costumes+(6).jpg" height="320" width="211" /></a><br /><br />You are a pretty avid costumer and cos-player. Cos-play has become a<br />huge part of fandom: It's become a staple of cons, it has brought tons of females into fandom, there are cos-play celebrities emerging, and there's even a TV reality show about cos-players. Where do you see Cos-play now, as opposed to say a decade ago, and where do you see it going?<br /><br />A decade ago I didn't even know the term "cosplay" All I knew is that I had a bigger costume collection than anyone else I knew, and would create my own reasons for wearing them if there wasn't a costume party or parade in town (grocery shopping at 2 a.m. in a fez and monkey suit? why not?). When a friend sent me a link for a cosplay event several years ago I thought, oh... that's what I'm doing!<br /><br />With the growth of social media it is much easier to share ideas and learn techniques as well as creating a way for people who are involved in costuming to find each other. As with any group there will always be purists who don't like change, but I think it's great that cosplay has become a more common way to express our love of our favorite characters, and that it brings in all genders and ethnicities. The more variety and kinds of people involved, the more we all grow and create a world where we celebrate these things more often!<br /><br />It has been exciting to see the ways that costuming techniques have grown and the amount of highly skilled artists out there who create amazing work. It's great to see the ways it affects fashion trends as well. I think in the future, in the way that fashion is trend driven by the masses, so too will cosplay culture be driven. Fashion and trends are no longer dictated to us. With DIY culture, Etsy and self-publishing, the only thing needed to share our creations is access to the internet. I look forward to the ways the culture will grow and seeing new artists and genres evolve.<br /><br />What do you feel draws people to Cos-play? Do you feel like it serves a basic psychological need for people? Or is it just fun? Or both?<br /><br />Although at its heart it is mainly for fun and the joy of sharing our love of our art, in an interactive way with the world, I think there are definite psychological benefits to cosplay culture. In the way that children role-play adult behavior that we later emulate in adult life, so too are we able to play out the aspects of the characters we admire, and grow from that experience.<br /><br />When I was younger I was painfully shy and found it extremely difficult to express myself and be social, although I desperately wanted to. When I decided to start performing with my band I forced myself, out of love for the music and the genre I portrayed, to get on stage, although it was very difficult. To do so I created a persona, based on attributes I wished I had myself. I modeled my on-stage persona after characters I aspired to be like, including Auntie Mame, Mae West and RuPaul. Every Saturday night Igot on stage and began became "Miss Midori". I found, over time, that aspects of the persona I created leaked into my every day life, after all these behaviors had come from within me initially. I was able to grow into a more confident and happy person by acting out the characters I admired.<br /><br />I think cosplay can produce the same benefits, it creates a pathway for us to channel aspects of ourselves that need to come out, whether we do so as another character or eventually as ourselves. It can be both cathartic and character building as well as an avenue to developing artistic skills and creating a social scene for people who are not usually very social.</div>

I have a feeling you do 20 other things that I don't even know about... What projects do you have going now?<br /><br />Parade culture is year-round so there is always a costume or contraption of some kind in various states of being built. With Wizard World/Comic Con now over, currently I am finishing parade costumes for the Mystic Krewe of P.U.E.W.C. / Chewbacchus, dog costumes and vehicle for Krewe of Barkus, several specialty cakes orders, a few art commissions, and practicing for a performance with the Chorus Girl Project. I am also working on new interchangeable bike costumes to ride in parades throughout the year.<br /><br />With my hat design label "The Great Hatsby" I have created a few special hat designs for some local New Orleans personalities including one for the founder of Chewbacchus, Ryan Ballard. I will also be creating a few hat designs we will debut at this year's Gay Easter Parade in the French Quarter.<br /><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-VWli6G4ngIg/UwbqXzkre0I/AAAAAAAAAgQ/QN2uzW49eSc/s1600/The-Chewbacchus-Parade-Mardi-Gras-Costumes+%281%29.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-VWli6G4ngIg/UwbqXzkre0I/AAAAAAAAAgQ/QN2uzW49eSc/s1600/The-Chewbacchus-Parade-Mardi-Gras-Costumes+(1).jpg" height="320" width="213" /></a><br />I also enjoy working as a make-up artist, and in addition to the bulk of beauty work I obviously love creating theatrical looks for Mardi-Gras, parades, masked balls, photoshoots and costumed events. Being a makeup artist is a daily creative challenge because you have a new canvas every day and a challenge to find a creative solution in a short period of time.<br /><br />In addition I am also a baker and have been creating art cakes as Nola Voodoo Cakes for a few years. I have created everything from multi-tiered giant wedding cakes to a cake made to look like a giant bottle of champagne or a realistic bust of Boba Fett. Thankfully, people in New Orleans like to eat and there is a great audience for both baked goods and artistically designed cakes.</div>

The seventh annual Krewe of Little Rascals children's parade sponsored by the city of Pascagoula will march at noon, Saturday, Feb. 15, starting from Beach Park. If it rains, they'll parade Feb. 22.<br /><br />The krewe's slogan is "Today's little rascals are tomorrow's leaders and our hope for the future!"<br /><br />Participation is open to all children up to age 12 with those under age 6 accompanied by an adult. Children are encouraged to wear costumes and will walk, ride, skate or be pulled along the route. Awards for first, second and third place, as well as honorable mention, will be given for best costumes and best floats.<br /><br />In keeping with tradition, the school system's administrator of the year will lead the parade.<br /><br />The king and queen will come from the city's elementary schools, which alternate the honor of providing the royalty. Teachers from that school submit names from which a king and queen are drawn.<br /><br />More information about the parade is available by contacting Rebecca Davis at 938-6604 or rdavis@cityofpascagoula.com, or LaLinda Grace at 938-2352 or lgrace@cityofpascagoula.com</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In 2014, the revelers will take a moment amid the colorful masks, beads and pageantry, to remember one woman who helped to carry on the tradition, and her role in reviving a festival that was nearly forgotten.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The "Mardi Gras of the North," as it was once known, was first held in Woonsocket during the 1950s. Sponsored by the Junior Chamber of Commerce, the celebration lasted four days, and included a parade and multiple sites for the "Grand Balls."</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The modern version, sponsored by Northern Rhode Island Council for the Arts, has more modest expectations, with just a single night of revelry, food and live music.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But the tradition just may have disappeared entirely if it wasn't for the work of volunteers, including the late Phyllis Thomas, and other dedicated supporters of the arts, who resurrected it in the 1990s.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Already, the city is alive with preparation as games, promotions and contests lead up to the big day.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
First, there are the would-be queens: a group of five lovely ladies vying for the royal title in 2014 through the sale of raffle tickets. Brittney Croteau, Carla Faria, Amanda Girard, Sheylon Lawson and Debbie Wesley Pitochelli are selling the $1 tickets, which will be entered into a drawing on the night of Mardi Gras. In addition to a queen - the lucky lady who sells the most tickets - two runner-up princesses will also preside over the Feb. 22 ball.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
First prize in the drawing will be $300; second prize is tickets for two to three shows at the Stadium Theatre; third prize is a gift certificate for Pilgrim House Inn in Newport; and fourth prize is a $50 gift certificate to River Falls Restaurant in Woonsocket. Proceeds from the ticket sales help offset expenses for the Mardi Gras celebration.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
On Feb. 16, NRICA will hold a Queen Coronation ceremony at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs hall at 1 p.m.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There's also the King Jace contest, a friendly annual competition to identify a "mystery monarch," who will be unmasked at the ball. Dave Richards of WOON Radio organizes the yearly game and has released 10 clues about the identity of King Jace XX.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The king:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
1. Has more in common with Prince Charles than most kings.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
2. Plays the game with fifty-one.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
3. Has been a president and a chairman.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
4. Is "ram" tough.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
5. Has royalty in his family.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
6. Watches the dollars and cents.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
7. Frequently sees double.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
8. Is torn between two countries.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
9. His favorite season is autumn.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
10. Occupies two houses.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Children's Mardi Gras Celebration will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the same day as the adult ball. The event is free for kids in grades kindergarten through 4 and includes a costume party and parade, along with entertainment by Linda Trudeau and prizes for best costumes. Chef Gary McLaughlin will provide macaroni and cheese, cookies, popcorn, and beverage for the young guests.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It all leads up to the big event Saturday night, when doors open at 5:30 p.m. at the former church building at 84 Cumberland St. The entertainment begins with country music by Jeff Gamache and Runaway Train.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
For the adults, McLaughlin will lay out a full Cajun buffet from 6 to 8 p.m. including New Orleans style crawfish, Creole chicken and Cajun porketta, plus Bourbon Street pudding for dessert. Guests will dance the night away with the return of the evening's second act: local zydeco band Slippery Sneakers. Organizers will hand out prizes for the best costumes and the fun will continue until 11:30 p.m.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It's all made possible with the help of volunteers from NRICA, a local organization that aims to upgrade community life through the arts.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"A lot of people that belong have the same mission of keeping our culture alive," said Berthiuame.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Thomas, a founding member of NRICA passed away last August after many years of working to preserve and promote beauty, culture and art in her hometown. Thomas was president of the Woonsocket Garden Club and Woonsocket Beautification Committee, and founder of the Animal Protective Association of Woonsocket. She fought for the preservation of parks and conservation areas as a member of the Woonsocket Conservation Commission and directed the Woonsocket Historical and Preservation Society. Thomas belonged to the Woonsocket Opera House Society, which later became the NRICA. She served on the Board of Directors, and as treasurer of the organization for many years.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
When NRICA was founded, the city's Mardi Gras events, once a proud and vibrant celebration, had long disappeared.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"They decided to revive the idea of Mardi Gras and it's been going on since," said Berthiuame.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
At the 20th annual event, Thomas will be honored during a brief ceremony between the two musical acts, and a plaque will be presented to members of her family.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"I think it's important a community preserve its culture and history," said Berthiuame. "In these tough economic times a tradition like Mardi Gras is especially important because people need an escape and a chance to just have a good time."</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Tickets for Mardi Gras 2014 can be purchased by calling Lorraine Cloutier at 401-762-9072. Advance tickets are $30, with limited tickets available at the door for $35. For more information, visit www.nrica.org .</div>

Buried deep within the yards upon yards of silks, taffetas, cottons and tulles laid out along the walls, spilling from shelves and hanging from racks in Tracy Thomson's work room is a pint-sized princess get-up, complete with a pointed hennin hat.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"I was about six when my mom made this for me," said Thomson, holding up the iridescent green dress, meticulously stitched with tiny leopard trim.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Thomson, a New Orleans artist best known for her Kabuki hats sold at Jazz Fest and the Dutch Alley Artists Co-op, has never outgrown her love of playing dress up. It's as much a passion for the 50-year-old milliner as it was for the 6-year-old princess.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
To say her two-story Mid-City home has a dedicated costume-making space would be to over simplify things. The front door opens to a double parlor turned double work room, used for personal costume design and professional hat-making.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
With the downstairs consumed by costuming, Thomson and her partner, Andy Roberts, live upstairs. ("I knew I loved that man when he let me put him in pink tights," she said).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In the front room, where the sofa sits in most shotgun houses, is a standing-height cutting table, a sitting-height sewing table and racks filled with plastic bins labeled brocades, linens, cottons, wools, trim and so on. Design books rest on tables and shelves. A window provides natural light. For a place overflowing with glittery, sparkly and shiny things, it's remarkably organized.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The front room is primarily for sewing, while the second room is for daydreaming up designs. A month before Mardi Gras, bolts of fabric covered nearly every surface, stacked so deep in spots it was hard to see the walls behind them.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"What I do is color stories," Thomson said. "I take all of the fabric that I've collected over the years, and I look at it to see if something is a costume in the making."</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In late January, Thomson was still mulling over the various designs she'd need for this year's parading, which includes Saturday night's Krewe du Vieux (she's on the costume committee for her subkrewe, Mama Roux), the Society of St. Anne on Mardi Gras and myriad other costume-required events throughout the season.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The inventory of fabric here would make crafters and seamstresses swoon. Much of it comes from New York. "I try never to spend more than $20 a yard, and most of it is under $10 (a yard)," Thomson said.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Some pieces were ultra bargains. A king-sized leopard-print satin bed sheet, for example, she found at the Goodwill. One day, surely it will work its way into a costume.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A mannequin in the center of the second room is dressed in robes worthy of a Shakespearean stage. The costume features a brocade riding coat with covered buttons, elongated cuffs, a coordinating hoop skirt, matching mask and tricorn hat.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Thomson made the elaborate outfit for a trip to Carnevale in Venice, Italy, she took four years ago with friends. "We all purchased the same color scheme fabric (a green dragonfly print) and then we each made our own costumes," she said. "We sat in the Piazza San Marco and drew a crowd."</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
To make the get-up more suitcase friendly, Thomson designed the hoop skirt to collapse.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
That trip to Venice was the only time Thomson, a native of a Staten Island, NY, has missed Mardi Gras in New Orleans in the 30 years she's lived here. But she has been one other Carnival outside of the Crescent City.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"The other one was in Cuba," she said, "but they move the date. They hold it in summer."</div>

Courtney Bullock: "I feel like my soul was born here, and it took my body a while to catch up."</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Courtney Bullock considers nearly every room in her lovingly renovated Riverbend home a dream room -- the master bath is her "dream bathroom"; the upstairs closet is her "dream walk-in"-- but one area shines above the rest.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"This is the costume mecca," she said, walking into a wonderland of make believe. Located off the kitchen and leading out to the back yard, the subdued multicolor of the tile floor and white cabinetry provide a perfect canvas for the explosion of tone and texture in Bullock's fantastical creations.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Counter-height workspace lines half the perimeter, with a sewing station at one end -- the self-threading sewing machine, a bequest from her late mother, a designer, is one of her favorite things about the room -- and oodles of crafting supplies at the other. Jars of different beads and glitter await employment, and a trio of glass wall sconces holds dozens of paint brushes. In the middle of the room sits a large round table covered in pretty floral oilcloth, to protect the furniture from hot glue and other costuming residue.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Her walk-in costume closet is a treasure trove of garments, accessories and make-up. Tutus hang on a single looped belt in one corner, with a cascade of wigs in another. Umbrellas decorated for different occasions, such as Uncle Lionel's jazz funeral or the 610 Stompers' summertime ball, hang from one side of the doorway.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A hand-painted chest of drawers bears the names of all its contents: "Headbands," "Masks," "Bras and Bustiers." A vanity and mirror crowned with dressing-room lights is her make-up station, and it's covered with different face paints and glitters.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"This room is really a hodgepodge, but it all came together," Bullock said. "I can really create something fantastic without leaving this room. It seems to always be able to provide whatever I need, whenever I need it."</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Bullock grew up in Los Angeles. Her father, a television writer for "The Flinstones" and "The Andy Griffith Show," among others, was "so funny, so kind, so generous," Bullock remembered. Her mother was always sewing and crafting, and the two parents raised their daughter to "think outside the box," Bullock said. "I grew up costuming . . . and it wasn't, 'Here's a princess costume; do you want to be a princess?' It was, 'What do you want to be?'"</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
After learning to papier-mâché in San Francisco, Bullock first moved to New Orleans in the early 1990s to work as a float builder for Studio 3. She instantly felt a rapport with the city's creative spirit, joining the gone-but-not-forgotten Mystic Herd of Nutria. Bullock later returned to California but, after the death of her parents, returned to New Orleans in 2008 and has been laying down strong roots ever since.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
She is now a member of Krewe du Vieux and serves on the costume committee for her subkrewe, Mishigas. In addition to designing fascinators for some of the marchers, she helped lead costume kit-making sessions to provide members with everything they need to look right on the big night. Bullock also is a member of a new marching group, the Dames de Perlage, and has been busily working on her Mardi Gras Indian-inspired costume.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This time of year, Bullock works on her costumes "every possibly moment when I'm home," she said. "I feel like my soul was born here, and it took my body a while to catch up." -- Molly Reid</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Diane Lundeen: "If you walk by and men love it, and women love it, and children want to play with it, you know you've done a great job."</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
When she recently moved into an Uptown camelback, Diane Lundeen didn't dilly-dally over where to put the couch or ponder the merits of positioning one rug here or another there. She started, first thing, by selecting the spot for her costume workshop.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The space had to be big enough: The room she chose, the third in the sidehall-style shotgun, is about 15 feet by 17 feet.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It needed a window for natural light, and it had to be central to the house. "Lots of people come over to sew," she said of those who share her passion. They include members of her Krewe du Vieux subkrewe, Mishigas (craziness, in Yiddish), for which she is co-captain and chief costumer.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Lundeen, by day a state worker's compensation judge and owner of chic pet boutique Petcetera on Magazine Street creates whimsical, remarkably detailed Carnival costumes. They take from 40 up to 120 hours to make.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"The gauge of a good costume," she said, "is if you walk by and men love it, and women love it, and children want to play with it. You know you've done a great job."</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The key to success in setting up a costume work room, she says, is organization. "If you don't know where the thread is or the rulers are, you can't get anything accomplished -- or it takes 10 times longer, and you get cranky.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"And making customs should be joyful!"</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So in Lundeen's costume room, she's repurposed the conference room table from her former law office to hold large spools of thread in a Crayola-box full of colors and several sewing machines -- she has four, each with a different function -- along with scissors and other supplies neatly grouped in bins. A wooden storage chest doubles as a coffee table, and it's often called upon for triple duty: It's also just the right height to stand on for hemming.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There's a TV over the mantle, for watching while she works. And in another nod to the social nature of her creative outlet, which Lundeen likens to the quilting bees of old, a built-in corner cabinet holds a bar. Champagne bottles, lying prone like Carnival revelers after a night that's little too wild, are stacked high. Many are gifts from those she helps with their sewing.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Passing on knowledge is as much a part of her aesthetic as her use of multiple textures and light.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Her costuming mentor, the late Daniel Breaux, told her, "You don't keep it for yourself. You pass it on as part of Louisiana's traditional heritage. It will die if you don't pass it on."</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Breaux taught her how to work with wire framing to accommodate the physics of a costume. Now, she said, she's moving out of a wire and papier mache phase and into a textile phase, experimenting with textures.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Her costume for Krewe du Vieux (Mishigas' theme, which combines Jewish heritage with current events: "Let My People Go Cup") depicts the Red Sea by mixing a sequined red leotard with a swirling skirt of red netting, red tulle and shiny silver ribbon, to add light. Dangling ruched netting pieces with red glitter create the waves.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
She'll teach the ruching technique to those fellow float-riders who are interested, she said, but some may not choose to go into such detail.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The outfit will be worn with a silver bra and red petticoats.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
She likes to make costumes in pieces, which can be reused. "I have a bra bin. I have a mantle bin. I have a tutu bin," she said, as if these were common household things.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Dana Embree: "Like Scarlett O'Hara, I've made a dress out of curtains."</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
For last year's Not So Super Superheroes party, a gathering of alter egos held the Friday before Mardi Gras, Dana Embree went as Blunder Woman, a hard-knocks version of Wonder Woman.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"I can't say it was sexy," she said, "but it was definitely amusing."</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The get-up now hangs, with dozens of others, on racks in her spacious costume-making studio. The room has pride of place in Embree's Mid City home, stretching across the front of the house.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The century-old home started life as a shotgun, but was renovated into a box double before Embree bought it. In the early 1990s, she opened it up more, reconfiguring the layout to make it into a single-family home and turning the former front room into a perfect costume-making space.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The entrance to the room is framed by a wall of bookshelves built by a friend. The same friend built the custom sewing table out of an old door, shrinking the table's height to accommodate Embree's 5 foot "and a bit" frame. The table is on wheels, so she can move it around.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A vintage notions cabinet holds threads and patterns. An early 1960s Bernina sewing machine found on eBay is the room's workhorse ("I can't believe how much it cost to ship it here," she said.)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"The big thing for me is to try not to let the space get too cluttered," Embree said. "I try to weed out costumes every year; otherwise I look like a hoarder. I do clothing swaps. This year, I had a wig swap. We had 20 people in here looking at wigs."</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
During the build-up to the Carnival season, friends often come over, cradling fabric, glitter and hot-glue guns for pot luck-costume making-wine parties.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"The first rule of costuming," Embree said, "is it has to be fabulous. The second is it has to be cost effective. The third is, can you pee? And the fourth, can you dance?"</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Costuming is both a professional and personal passion for Embree, who parades with the Box of Wine marching krewe before Bacchus and with 'tit Rex, the pint-sized shoebox float parade. She's a costume designer/costumer in the film industry.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A native of Oklahoma, Embree moved to New Orleans in 1979. "I arrived on the back of a VW van," she said "I had a trunk and my sewing machine, like all good hippies."</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Her love of costuming, though, started long before she moved to the land of Mardi Gras. "A normal day of play for me as a kid was in the yard, dressed in my dad's T-shirt and a tutu. I just never stopped dressing that way." -- Susan Langenhennig</div>
